What QEI is

The Queensland Eye Institute is an independent, not-for-profit organisation that combines clinical ophthalmology, research and education under one roof. Established to lift the standard of eye care across Queensland, QEI today is the state's largest independent ophthalmology centre — covering virtually every subspecialty from cornea and cataract through retina, glaucoma, oculoplastics and paediatric ophthalmology.

QEI is also home to an active research arm with peer-reviewed publications and clinical trials in ocular surface disease, retinal disease and corneal surgery. The proximity of working clinicians to active research is part of what makes the building distinctive.

Where Dr Gunn and Dr Cronin fit

Dr David Gunn and Dr Brendan Cronin consult at QEI as corneal and anterior segment subspecialists, and operate from the laser suite at Focus Vision — the dedicated corneal and refractive surgery clinic they founded, co-located inside the QEI building.

Patients at QEI who require keratoconus, CAIRS, laser vision correction, premium cataract surgery or modern corneal transplantation are seen by Dr Gunn or Dr Cronin in the corneal stream. Patients needing other subspecialty care — retina, glaucoma, paediatrics — are seen by the relevant QEI consultant.

Why this matters for CAIRSPlan

CAIRSPlan was built inside this clinical environment. The 85-eye published nomogram, the iterative surgical refinement, and the planning workflow itself all came from real CAIRS planning sessions at the Focus Vision / QEI building. The proximity to QEI's research culture is part of why the tool reflects current evidence rather than legacy assumptions.
